Fire Safety for your Furry Friends
Consider flameless candles
Skip the lighter and reach for artificial candles instead. Flameless candles are not only a safer alternative for power outages or ambiance, but they are also great for households with dogs and cats. Flames can attract young puppies and older dogs alike, as dogs tend to err on the side of curious instead of cautious.
Assign a family member to be in charge of each pet during an emergency
To prepare for any emergency, designate a family member to be responsible for each family pet should you ever have to evacuate your home and if there is enough time to safely do so. Also, agree on a“fire spot” where members of your family should meet up should an emergency arise. Keep in mind that it should be a safe distance from the home and easily visible to first responders. Additionally, make sure that your family has a plan for many different types of emergencies, including tornadoes, tropical storms, earthquakes, etc. and plan for pet safety as well accordingly.
Remember, the safety of you and your family takes priority!
Fire alert window clings
Pet Fire Window Decals are a great way to alert firefighters what pets are in the house and where they might be located. Put these decals in the window of your main entrances. While they can certainly remain there year-round, it's especially important for when pets are going to be left alone for an extended period of time. This way, first responders will a) know there are pets in the home and b) have an idea as to where to look for them.
Pet-proof rooms when away (especially for young pets)
When you have to leave your pets home alone for a short time, it’s important to make sure your house is pet-proofed. Extinguish all open flames and pick up electrical cords, safely out of chewing distance. It’s best to keep animals in playpens near an entrance to the house should a fire emergency were to happen.
While July 15th is National Pet Fire Safety Day, these fire safety tips are always applicable and should be put into use during all times of the year. It’s important for you, and your pets, to be prepped for all types of emergencies.
